I recently had the good fortune to exhibit a couple of pieces in the PPHA Artist Collective’s exhibition entitled “I am Art- and this is me”. The Collective consists of a diverse group, with talent in painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, photography, and writing. Some of us are emerging artists, others are professional or hobbyists but we all have the inner fire that drives us to make and create and to share our vision with the world.
The exhibition was held in a newly renovated space “The Laneway Artspace” in St Kilda run by the inimitable Geoffrey Williams and was the 3rd exhibition by the group.
Below is the doll/sculpture I created called “Wig-Womb of Creativity”. In this doll I celebrate the culmination of the past 7 years of opening to and honouring feminine wisdom in my life. Through my creative and inner journey, I have come to a point where I am now able to show up in the world, share my wisdom and learning with other women and help them to find their inner power through my Seasons of the Doll work.
Wig-Womb holds within her womb the seed/egg of future creativity, which seems to indicate that the cycle is never finished. Each end point is the beginning of another. This too is feminine wisdom. Her mind is balanced (yin -yang) and although she has no limbs, I feel her to be present and grounded. She is connected to joy and vitality through the rainbow of light and witnessing the way the elements intermingle to create beautiful visions. I birthed her easily!
Thank you to Geoffrey, PPHA and the Artist Collective for their encouragement, support and friendship.
It was a great experience and let’s do it again in 2017!
For the last 5 years I have been taking part in an online Medicine doll course with Barb Kobeof the USA. What a process of growth and transformation ensued as I sought to find ways to “reclaim my power”! In shamanic societies loss of power is called “soul loss” and regaining these parts is called “soul retrieval”. By bringing lost parts of our selves home we can again embody our fullness and wholeness.
This doll making course enabled me to explore ways in which I’d given power away by conforming to others expectations, disregarding my intuition, and allowing self judgments and criticism to dictate my self worth just to name a few.
My final doll, the Inner Healer brings all that I have learned in this journey together. I called her “La Lumina” which means “The Carrier of Light”. She stands as a reminder of the inner wisdom and the gifts that I have available to me.
Below is a little of her message:
” I am welcoming your child back to her home, the place of the heart. She is always a part of the universe, born of the celestial bodies, the moon, sky and stars. She is part of the lineage of female ancestors-the craftswomen, home creators and nurturers.
I am here to remind you of your Inner Flame that always burns within you and the spiral of expansion and contraction that creates flow and life itself.
Here in my Medicine bag I hold the gifts of this process”.
I would like to thank Barb for her facilitation of a remarkable journey and to all my doll sisters for their healing presence. It has been such a gift to share and learn in this way.
If you are interested in participating a course or would like a Healing Doll made for yourself, friend or relative please email me on the contact page.
I created this healing icon doll for a dear relative who is currently struggling with debilitating fatigue. I asked her for her favourite colours and symbols and used some of the ribbons that she had previously gifted me.
The doll reminds me of a forming butterfly and carries the hope of transformation in the journey with illness. For me, she embodies grace and serenity.
The name Caleah came, and I didn’t even know it was a “real” name until I googled it and found that it means “brave warrior”. Totally apt, because the courage required to live day after day with such extreme fatigue is indeed that of a warrior.
However, the battle is not with outer enemies or even with the illness. Rather, I feel it is about accepting and learning to live with oneself as one is. In this sense the “battle” is with the ego that doesn’t like dropping the “doing” and all the goals it “should” be working towards in order to prove it has lived a life. Stripped back to just “being” one can find grace, serenity and compassion in surrender to the present moment. The posssibilty of healing and transformation can then arise.
Join me in this sacred doll making circle to create a Dream Spirit Doll embodying your prayers, dreams and aspirations for 2012!
You will be guided to connect with healing symbols and words that express your innermost wishes through the creative tools of intention setting, visualisation and journaling. We will use these affirmations to make a wrapped doll from natural and non natural materials, fibres, threads and embellishments.
The finished doll will serve as a powerful guide as you journey into the year.
A variety of materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional fabrics, beads or special embellishments to incorporate into your doll.
